Champions Priors win North East Two!

Hurstbourne Priors completed a fantastic 2011 campaign with an emphatic 8 wicket thrashing of Ropley II. Having covered the wicket for majority of the week, Priors won the toss and elected to put ten-man Ropley II into bat, to make the most of the swinging conditions.

Priors made a perfect start with skipper Hamson bowling a quick swinging delivery that Greenwood knicked to Trinder. Ropley's most experienced batsmen, Currall and Green, dug in for many overs, frustrating Priors’ momentum. Priors turned to a number of their occasional bowlers and this decision paid off when Shahinian trapped Currall LBW.  Green soon followed when Richard Carter bowled a delightful delivery that Trinder snaffled behind the stumps. Carter (3-18) and Hamson (3-11) then ran through the weak Ropley II lower order and limited the away side to 81 all out, with several overs remaining.

With Priors sensing promotion, Cady and Shahinian set off in a positive manner until Cady edged behind off the bowling of Spevock. Shahinian played with control and punished any loose deliveries until he missed an out- swinger from Sutton. Ropley bowled with aggression and made many LBW appeals which experienced umpire Golding turned down.

Priors decided to take the game to Ropley with skipper Hamson (35 not out) and Carter (9) hitting a number of boundaries and running the opposition around in the outfield.  Priors reached 82 in the 22nd over and ensured they took 23 points, which guaranteed that they were crowned North East 2 champions, narrowly seeing off both Compton and Chandlers Ford and Rowledge.

Hurstbourne Priors cricket club would like to thank John Golding for his umpiring in 2011.

Priors pile on the runs to beat Basing!

Hurstbourne Priors are within touching distance of promotion following an emphatic win 161 run at home to Old Basing II.  The away side won the toss and put the home side in.  Malcolm Curtis bowled a disciplined line for the away side and troubled both Steve Cady and Ashok Nautiyal.  Nautiyal patience eventually wained and Curtis bowled him with the score at 55.  Priors skipper Mark Hamson joined Cady and they picked up the rate immediately and put on 60 for the second wicket.  Cady rode his luck throughout his knock of 50 and was dropped on four occasions before being yorked by Oldcorn with the score on 115.

With the wicket drying out and batting conditions improving the home side changed gear with Hamson and Richard Carter scoring freely.  Basing rotated their bowlers to no avail and only stopped the Priors charge when Oldcorn superbly ran out Carter (42).  At 189 for 3 skipper Hamson took the assault to the opposition powering six huge sixes and 10 fours.  Hamson (111 not out) took just 17 balls to take his fifty to a hundred and reached his century with a delightful six through square leg.  Hamson and Naik put on 71 for the fourth wicket and put Priors in control at 261 for 4 at the break.

Priors put Old Basing under pressure immediately in their innings as Mark Matthews removed Oldcorn's leg stump in the third over.  With Priors keen on early wickets and mindful of last week, skipper Hamson introduced Kumar into the attack and he bowled a jaffa to remove Kevin Oldcorn with a seaming delivery.    Basing batted stoutly to keep picking up invaluable batting points.  Curtis was digging in for the duration until Carter took a stunning one handed catch of Kumar in the gulley. Basing's middle order dug in and Richard Dane (27) showed his class stroking a number of deliveries of the Priors bowling until Matthews juggled an easy catch in the deep to remove him.  Skipper Hamson added to his hundred with two wickets in his first over and was unlucky not to complete a hat trick.  With the game drifting Priors continued to rotate bowlers to keep the wickets flowing.  With one over remaining Priors needed one more wicket to claim maximum points and finally got their reward with Samways rattling around the boundary to stop Basing claiming a second run and Kumar reacted quickly to complete a fine run out.  Priors remain top after taking all 24 points.

Hurstbourne Priors would like to thank RJC Agencies for sponsoring the match ball and Mrs Blyth for supplying a delightful cakes.

Ton up from Ashok seeing Priors into first place

Ashok Nautiyal scored his maiden Hurstbourne Priors century and helped secure a 82 run victory at the Recreation ground on Saturday. Silchester put the home side in and controlled the early overs mainly thanks to an impressive opening spell from Cairns.  Nautiyal continuing his form from last week batted in a calm manner from the start and punished any loose deliveries, in particular those on his legs.  Silchester opted for a number of slower bowlers and were rewarded when Mark Hamson (21) was trapped LBW off Hearn.

Richard Carter (44) joined Nautiyal and upped the rate on a slow low wicket and scored regular boundaries.

Nautiyal enjoyed some average Silchester bowling in the middle overs and powered four massive sixes in his knock including one into the Priors pavilion.  Carter and Nautiyal put on 130 for the third wicket when Carter was stumped off the bowling off  Hearn.  Nautiyal reached 124 when he finally went for one boundary too many and was caught at deep square leg.  With one over remaining Budd hit a typical low flying six to the mid wicket boundary ensuring Priors hit their best home score at 233 for 4 off 42 overs.

Silchester knew that a positive start was a must and Oliver tucked into Matthews early deliveries driving several balls through the covers.  Silchester skipper Mccormack was struggling to score and mistakenly turned a ball onto the on side with Kumar taking an easy catch.  Priors first change bowler Stewart Samways made an immediate impression on the game when Oliver skyed one to Priors skipper Hamson.  With the score on 50 for 2 the away side knew that the rate had to be increased and the useful looking Jordan was bamboozled by a delightful delivery from Samways (2-35).  Rajiv Kumar (3-27) provided good support at the other end and was on a hat trick when he bowled Macklin and Porter.  With wickets continuing to tumble Priors looked in total control but with some lax fielding and patient batting from Dixon (48 not out) the home side started to become frustrated.  Various bowling changes were made but Priors could only take 9 wickets in their allotted overs and came away one point short of the maximum.

Hurstbourne Priors would like to thank RJC Agencies for sponsoring the match ball.

Priors keep the promotion charge alive

Hurstbourne Priors maintained their promotion push with an emphatic win away to Froxfield on Saturday in North East 2.  Froxfield were invited to bat on a good looking surface and made use of any bad deliveries.  With the rate above four the express pace of Mark Matthews (3-21) was too much for Turner who went to back to a fast delivery and was clean bowled.  Stewart Samways once again showed his wealth of experience bowling an excellent line and length.  The home side became frustrated with a number of unplayable deliveries and Barnett lashed out against Samways (2-12) only to be caught brilliantly by the bowler.  Mark Hamson removed Edmonds with a rasping swinging delivery and the home side were now in trouble at 57 - 3 with the run rate strangled.  Froxfield veteran Kevin Hiscock (21 not out) anchored the innings but wickets continued to tumble as Rajv Kumar removed Dowlin and Brailey thanks to impressive catches by Hamson and Matthews.  Samworth showed some lower order resilience and powered a number of boundaries before Trinder snaffled him off Matthews.  The home side dribbled their way to 129 for 9 off their 42 overs.

Priors response was slow and were soon in trouble with their experiment to ask Mark Matthews to open the batting failing as he played on for a duck.  Ashok Nautiyal and Mark Hamson (29) struggled with the early overs as Brailey and Singleton bowled well.  With the first bowling changes being made Priors used this as an opportunity to increase the run rate and made good use of the fast outfield with some excellent stroke play.  Priors reached 54 when Hamson was caught by Brailey off Dowlen.  Richard Carter joined Ashok and both played a number of sumptuous drives through the covers.  Ashok (48 not out) and Richard Carter (36 not out) never looked in any trouble and saw Priors home with 6 overs to spare making sure Priors claimed 23 points keeping the pressure on the 3 teams around them.
